Road accidents in Oyo kill 261 in 11 months

As many as 261 people died, while 1,700 others were injured in road accidents from January to November in Oyo State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps Sector Commander in Oyo, Joshua Adekanye, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Ibadan.

Adekanye said the command experienced 609 crashes during the period.

He attributed the main cause of accidents to speeding, false overtaking and blowing tires.

The sector commander said the command had identified four main reasons why some motorists were speeding, including good roads, especially on the Lagos-Ibadan highway.

He said most of the vehicles on the Lagos-Ibadan highway were speeding due to the smoothness of the road on this route.

"Other reasons include insecurity, impatience and a desire to make more money, especially commercial drivers," he said.

Adekanye said the command has put in place many measures to avoid or minimize road accidents before, during and beyond the Christmas season.

The sector commander said the command will continue to educate the public and motorists through tours of car parks and other public places to educate people about the inherent dangers of speeding.

Adekanye said the command began planning for the high traffic that typically characterized the celebration of Yuletide by launching its Ember Months campaign in October.

He said the command would engage in joint patrols with other sister security agencies to deal with the high flow of traffic.

Adekanye said no less than 880 regular marshals and 890 special marshals would be deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow during the state command's Christmas celebration.

“We also injected 35 patrol vehicles, two motorcycles, two tow trucks and entered into a partnership with the association of tow trucks, for a rapid removal of the obstruction during this period,” he said. he declared.

The sector commander advised motorists to ensure their vehicles were in good condition and to avoid night travel to avoid accidents and other unforeseen circumstances.
