Oyo: sacked PMS chairman escapes as police raid house and arrest 78 suspects

Sporadic gunfire and wanton use of dangerous weapons, according to reliable reports, began around midnight and lasted until 5 a.m.

Residents were glued to their beds as thugs threatened to shoot and maim anyone who put up resistance.

One of the locals who preferred anonymity said he was forced to wake up by sporadic gunfire.

He said that although it wasn't the first time they would have such an experience, last night was different.

According to him, "Auxillaire and his men are terrorizing the region. They always pretend to have the support of the government. We are powerless.

Confirming the attack, Police Commissioner Adebowale Williams revealed at a press conference that a raid was carried out at his Diamond Hotel, Alakía Isebo in which 78 suspects were arrested

The police commissioner said the command had a clue to a plan by loyalists of the embattled former PMS chairman to disrupt the existing peace in the state.

The police, he said, acted on information that led to the arrest of the suspects and the recovery of weapons and ammunition.

He said, "The Oyo State Police Command, in its proactive nature while acting on intelligence-based surveillance, was able to thwart an attempt to create widespread carnage and civil unrest in the state by some members of the Park Management System (PMS) headed by one Alhaji Mukaila Lamidi AKA Auxiliary Following the immediate dissolution of the State Park Management System Disciplinary Committee.

"Following the above, on Tuesday 05/30/2023, during a raid coordinated by Strategic Intelligence around its location at the Diamond Hotel, Alakia-Isebo, under Egbeda LGA, (78) Sixty -eighteen suspected thugs who had perfected plans to unleash chaos in the early hours of today across large parts of the metropolis were arrested in possession of sophisticated firearms, (724) seven hundred and twenty-four assorted cartridges with charms, (33) thirty-three mobile phones and a cash sum of approximately (#3,450,000) Three Million Four Hundred Fifty Thousand Naira only.

"In addition, during the raid, sophisticated firearms were recovered from inside hotel rooms and from the trunks of vehicles parked inside the hotel.

“It should be noted that although the leader of the PMS was able to escape with some of his boys during the duel with the police, one member of the group was however neutralized during a duel with the police.

"Recall that the same group was allegedly responsible for the attack on (14) fourteen members of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN) along the Agodi Axis under the North East LGA from Ibadan en route to the venue for yesterday's inaugural celebrations.
