Pantami and the “datafication of society”, by Zeenat Sambo

It is fascinating that a 129-page book on "dataification of society" can keep its readers spellbound on a journey to understanding technology in the simplest way, traversing many chapters particularly focused on datafication in the digital age, with Nigeria as a case study.

The recent publication of two books by the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Pantami, has once again highlighted the importance of technology in national development.

Books titled Cybersecurity Initiatives for Securing a Country and Datafication of Society to Foster an Internet Economy explore digital inclusiveness and growth.

The books, which were unveiled at the Stakeholder Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies, hosted by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Lagos, dipped into the technology realm, sparking understanding of the technology and the involvement of all in the fourth generation technology for the digital economy.

It is fascinating that a 129-page book on "dataification of society" can keep its readers spellbound on a journey to understanding technology in the simplest way, traversing many chapters particularly focused on datafication in the digital age, with Nigeria as a case study.

The first chapter tells how datafication has encroached on the daily activities of a person who is assisted by technological accessories like smartphones, gadgets, emails and others that can easily generate, encode, transfer and receive soft information for many purposes, with the representation of binary digits called data.

With a focus on the growth of the national digital economy, the book in its second chapter envisions the improvement of Nigeria's traditional economy into a digital economy by engaging with digital tools to upgrade level the ecosystem and enable it to be an active member of the global digital economy of tomorrow.

It also predicts the transformation of the traditional economy into a digital economy through the deliberate application of digital tools to ensure that the ICT sector has the highest growth rate of the national economy and contributes visibly to the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

The third chapter of the book revolves around understanding the power shift of Nigeria's wealth transition from mineral and natural resources to digital resources and innovations. The phrase "data is the new oil" has become a new identity for a nation that used to depend on oil and is now looking to digital innovations across all sectors to transform and grow the economy.
