PDP BoT Raises Committee to End Wike/Atiku Feud

The Board of Directors (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has set up a committee to interact with Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and the party's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, regarding the selection of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as the running mate.

The council met on Wednesday at the party's national secretariat in Abuja under the chairmanship of its chairman, Senator Walid Jibrin.

Jibrin previously announced that the board would interfere in the dispute to end it and ensure that the main opposition contests the next election as a united force.

He said the meeting would produce recommendations on how to end the feud while its members would then meet with Governor de Rivers and other former party presidential candidates.

Speaking to the media on the outcome of the meeting, a BoT member, Senator Abdul Ningi, who disclosed the decision to establish the committee, said, "We established this BoT committee to be able to interface between warring factions, especially the acrimony taking place between the presidential candidate and Governor Wike and any other conflict taking place in the nation within our party formation.

"The committee is the full committee. This means that all other members of the BoT are members of the committee. I cannot tell you the grievances and the deadline."

Speaking during the call for the resignation of National National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, the BoT member said, "We haven't even discussed the issue of anyone resigning. We let's discuss what we discussed, and what we discussed is what I told you."

Meanwhile, PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has called for increased collaboration between the governments of the UK and Nigeria to find solutions to issues that mutually benefit both countries.

He made that call on Monday when a delegation from the British High Commission, led by Catriona Laing, met him at his residence in Abuja.

According to a statement from his press office, the meeting discussed a wide range of issues relating to security, education, agriculture, economy and the promotion of unity national in Nigeria.

The High Commissioner noted that the meeting with the former Vice President was part of the UK government's continued commitment to strengthening democracy and credible elections in Nigeria.

Some members loyal to Wike did not attend the meeting, suggesting that disagreement persists within the board on the way forward in the face of the crisis.

When his grouse was raised, it was learned that some members had suggested the party could do without Wike, while others allegedly pleaded for the matter to be handled carefully so that the party's chances in 2023 are not in danger.

It was understood that the issue of major party positions held by northerners was discussed, but no concrete resolution was reached.
