Pearce 'stunned' by Lingard decision, says player should be 'desperate' for West Ham reunion

Stuart Pearce has admitted he was still 'quite amazed' that Jesse Lingard decided to join Nottm Forest above West Ham this summer.

Lingard caused a stir during the summer transfer. He was out of contract as his contract with Man Utd ended.

The midfielder has already enjoyed a bumper loan spell at West Ham during the 2020/21 campaign.

The Englishman has decided not to join the Hammers permanently as he returns to Man Utd to fight for his place.

It didn't go well as he barely played for the Red Devils last season. He made another questionable decision over the summer when he opted to sign for Nottm Forest over West Ham.

Lingard is without a goal or an assist in seven Premier League appearances for Forest. He was an unused substitute on Monday night when Steve Cooper's side drew 1-1 with Aston Villa.

Forest currently sits 19th in the Premier League and is one of the favourites.

The 29-year-old runs out of contract next year so his move to Nottingham Forest could prove to be short-lived.

Pearce worked with Lingard during their time together at West Ham. He was the club's coach for two years before leaving earlier this year.

The 60-year-old thinks Lingard should be 'desperate' to work with David Moyes again at West Ham:

"The team haven't won for a number of games and Jesse ended up on the bench," Pearce told talkSPORT.

"Going back to his time at West Ham, he walked through the door with us for six months and was magnificent.

"(He) really gave us a different dimension to our game, he could carry the ball, he knew when to drop a pass and when to carry the ball. He had a great time.

"You make your choice as to where you move and where you don't move. I'm away from West Ham now, but I'm still quite amazed.

"If it was me, I would be desperate to come back and work with David Moyes again."

Speaking earlier this month, Forest boss Steve Cooper insisted now was "not the time to talk about individuals" amid their poor start to the season:

"He's a top player but we don't treat him any differently here," Cooper said.

"He will feel just like everyone else, I'm sure, but it's about looking to the future now and improving on what's been going on over the past few weeks, in particular.

"This is not the time to talk about individuals. This is really about the narrative of being together and as one, as much as we can. This is what you do in difficult times, you stick together and get out of it."
