Piers Morgan blasts 'heartless' Celtic fans who hijacked one-minute applause for Queen

Broadcaster Piers Morgan slammed 'heartless' Celtic fans for their anti-monarchy banner and chants during their 2-0 loss to St Mirren on Sunday. Hoops supporters diverted up-to-the-minute applause for Queen Elizabeth II after her death, and had already been charged by UEFA over the banner they held up in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk.

The minute's silence held at Premier League games this weekend was dropped in favor of a minute's applause at St Mirren Park, as there were concerns over whether fans would observe the silence but chants of 'If you hate the royal family, clap your hands' rang out in the stadium to loud applause.

A banner with the same message was held up, prompting Sky Sports to issue an apology. "Apologies if you were offended by anything you might have heard," said commentator Ian Crocker. "Most people showed respect, some didn't."

A minute's silence was well observed between Arsenal and Brentford fans on the same day, as Morgan took to social media to criticize Celtic fans. "Wonderful applause at Brentford/Arsenal in the 70th minute for the Queen, and moving spontaneous singing of the national anthem," Morgan tweeted. "What a contrast to the heartless Celtic fans who chose to mock and taunt a 96-year-old woman who loved Scotland so much."

BT Sport were also forced to apologize during Celtic's Champions League clash with Shakhtar as they displayed a banner which read: 'F*** THE CROWN'. UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against the club for the banners at the neutral venue in Warsaw.

Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou called on fans to listen to protocol. "I have the same message for our fans that we always have," he said. "As I said before the game [against Shakhtar], we will respect the protocols. We wore black armbands on Wednesday night.
