Platform to counter fake news launched in Calabar

An entrepreneur, Nzan Ogbe, has launched a social media platform that would, among other things, counter the scourge of fake news in the country.

The platform, FacesofNaija, launched in Calabar, Cross River State on Tuesday.

Mr. Ogbe, who is the Chairman of FacesofNaija, said apart from the challenges posed by fake news, FacesofNaija was built with the aim of connecting Nigerians to their community regardless of their current location.

Mr. Ogbe said the platform was a community platform that would provide Nigerians with alternative social media platforms for easy communication.

According to him, "Convenience, integration and excellent user experience are the main reasons for the evolution of social media platforms.

"These three pillars are at the heart of all major growth seen on all major platforms that have maintained a rapid following of users.

"The Nigerian social media scene is calling for a social media platform that embraces these tenants and enables Nigerians to benefit from the influence of their peers.

“FacesofNaija was born with these tenants in mind. FacesofNaija promises a unique user experience never seen before in the Nigerian social media landscape.

"The company intends to create a community-driven platform powered by verifiable information, virtual tour capability and much more.

"Social media platforms are the norm these days for their global accessibility, but FacesofNaija will be Nigeria's first dynamic social media platform."

He said the platform was a bridge between Nigerians and their community by enabling them to get first-hand information from their community.

“The platform also offers reviews of indigenous newspapers and latest world news to keep people up to date with current events in the nation and the world at large.

"It was intended to counter the scourge of fake news and its implications," he said.

The president further said that FacesofNaija also offers features like games, market, jobs, groups, live streaming among others.

"All of these and more are wrapped up in this all-new experience that can be downloaded from Playstore or Appstore," Ogbe said.

Similarly, the president said the company also introduced a new media experience; the 3D virtual tour that would allow users to visit tourist sites, hotels, schools, religious institutions and monuments.

According to him, "This unique feature brings a new experience not available on more popular platforms by allowing users to have direct experience of different destinations, events and places as if they were physically present.

"From 360 degree video of the event and scenery to a tour placement that you can move anywhere in the tour with just one click."
