Police arrest ex-DSS officer and others for theft of van in Abia, Delta and Lagos

Abia State Police Command arrested 10 members of the robber gang who raided a bullion van on July 26 and took away around 390 million Naira.

Police Commissioner Janet Agbede said the suspects belong to a 14-member gang that specializes in stealing vans across Nigeria.

The PC told reporters on Monday that the suspects were apprehended at different times and locations in Abia, Delta, Lagos, Ondo, Rivers and Imo states.

Agbede recalled that a special intelligence team had been put in place after the ambush at Ntigha Junction on the Isialangwa axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt highway.

The commissioner revealed that the suspects confessed to the crime "in their individual voluntary statements".

The Police Chief said they further confessed to stealing bullion vans from Ajah in Lagos, Akure Road in Ondo, Asaba in Delta and Mbaise in Imo.

These suspects revealed that the Abia attack was carried out after approximately two months of monitoring the bullion van.

Adesoji Adeniyi, alias "Soji" and Albert Nwachukwu, alias "White" were arrested in Lagos.

Felix Ajalaja, Moshood Opeyemi, alias "Abiola", and Azubuike Amaefule, alias "Zubby", arrested in Rivers.

Nnamdi Nwaosu, alias "Prophet", Monday Samuel, alias "MD", and Matthew Christmas, alias "Aluwa", arrested in Imo, Ondo and Delta.

Others are Abia's two brothers, Chikwendu and Prosper Israel, arrested in the state.

Prosper told reporters that he joined his brother in criminal activities after he was fired from the Department of State Services (DSS).

One general purpose machine gun with 53 rounds of live ammunition, 13 AK47 rifles with 1,749 live ammunition were recovered.

Others were two improvised explosive dynamites, a cut-to-size double-barreled pistol with five live rounds, 84 AK47 magazines, and a Mercedes Benz truck used to conceal the weapons.

N10,184,000 of the N390 million stolen from the bullion van was also recovered. Other gang members are on the loose.
