Police kill two suspected gun smugglers in Zamfara

Zamfara Police Command said its personnel killed two arms dealers on Saturday and recovered ammunition they were carrying.

The arms traffickers were intercepted on the Gummi - Anka highway, police said.

The command's spokesman, Mohammed Shehu, said the police acted on an intelligence report about the movement of the car in which the suspects were traveling from Taraba State to Zamfara.< /p>

Mr. Shehu said while other suspects in the vehicle ran through the bush with gunshot wounds, two of the suspects were killed.

He said some of the weapons and ammunition recovered by police during a search of the scene include three live shells for rocket-propelled grenades, three high-explosive shells, 152 rounds of live ammunition for AK 47 rifles, 200 cartridges of live ammunition for anti-aircraft guns and some charms.

Mr. Shehu said the operation led to an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and police that lasted for hours.

He said the weapons were being passed to terrorist gangs in Zamfara from Taraba State.

"The exploit was recorded following an intelligence tip received on the movement of the suspects inside a Toyota Corolla vehicle containing the aforementioned parts of the Taraba State Enroute Terrorist Camp in Zamfara State.Two (2) of the suspects were fatally injured while others fled into the bush with possible gunshot wounds.The injured suspects were taken to Yariman Bakura Specialty Hospital Gusau and later confirmed dead by the doctor upon admission,” he said.

Mr. Shehu said more officers had been deployed to the site to "build confidence".

He assured that the police would continue to engage in ridding the state of terrorists and criminal activities.

Terrorist activities, including killings, kidnapping for ransom and cattle rustling, have increased in the North West states, including Zamfara State.

Arms traffickers supplying weapons, ammunition and other necessities to terrorists, as well as informants providing information, are part of a large clique supporting the activities of terrorists.
