Anambra Police Command said security officers killed five gunmen in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area, the country home of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) confirmed the incident to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Awka.
He said the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 12, near the Afo-Uzo junction in the community of Isuofia, when criminal elements opened fire on the Joint Police Team /soldier at a checkpoint.
Mr. Ikenga said security officers also recovered a gray colored Toyota Venza jeep with Lagos registration: KRD 344 BT.
He said the situation had been brought under control and security patrols had been intensified in the area.
“The situation is under control after five of the criminal elements have been neutralized and police/military patrols have intensified in the area,” he said.
Distress callThe police spokesman said the operation followed a distress call around 10:30 a.m. from the Afor-Uzo Isuofia market area that thugs had attacked a security checkpoint in the area.
“Joint forces from FOB Aguata reacted quickly, engaged the thugs in a gun duel and neutralized five of the gunmen while others escaped with gunshot wounds in a dark blue Lexus 470 jeep without a license plate," he said. .
Mr. Ikenga added that State Police Commissioner Echeng Echeng, while instructing officers to maintain the tempo of the assault on criminal elements, ordered to intensify patrols and improve operational positioning in response. to distress calls.
Meanwhile, State Information Commissioner Paul Nwosu hailed in a statement the bravery of the security team in neutralizing the gunmen in Isuofia.
"Our gallant and alert security guards gave them a hot chase and immediately returned fire and incapacitated five of the gang members in a fierce firefight.
