Potato blight ravages potato farms in the Plateau

The Supreme Leader of the Rigwe Nation, Brra Nggwe Rigwe and the Acting Chairman of the Bassa Traditional Council, HRH Reverend Ronku Aka have called on the Plateau State Government to come to the aid of the farmers in his domain whose Irish potato farms have been badly affected. by potato late blight this year.

The Supreme Leader made the call after receiving a report on the level of casualties suffered as a result of the outbreak and said it was quite sad and worrying.

"Rigwe People have become one of the leading producers of Irish potatoes on the Plateau and that indicates the level of resources usually invested and injected into the course and this year it is proving to be a disaster leaving people in tears counting their losses,” Reverend Aka added.

He reiterated that such types of losses tend to discourage people and traumatize them due to regular reflection on the situation.

According to him, in addition to being a major source of income, it also serves and helps to reduce the problems of hunger and food shortage.

He called on the Plateau government through the Ministry of Agriculture to look into the matter with a view to helping affected farmers.

The Supreme Leader said Sarkin Noma Irigwe was asked to compile the list of affected people for further documentation and follow-up.
