Rage Against the Machine has canceled its European tour, including headlining festivals in Reading and Leeds, due to a medical issue involving the singer Zack de la Rocha.

The news comes two weeks before the American band are due to headline both UK festivals and perform at Edinburgh.

A statement said the leader was following "medical advice".

He did not specify the medical issue, but de la Rocha, 52, injured his leg the scene in Chicago in July.

The band rock band, best known for the 1993 anti-authority anthem Killing in the Name, has resumed its US tour with de la Rocha performing seated, and will play three more gigs in New York this week.

"So Zack needs to go home to rest and rehab," Thursday's statement read. "The flights, travel time and rigorous schedule in the UK and Europe are simply too risky for a full recovery.

"We are very sorry to all our fans who have waited years to see us and hope to return to Rage soon."

The band was originally booked to headline Reading and Leeds in 2020, but this has been canceled due to Covid.

Festival organizers have yet to announce a replacement. The Arctic Monkeys and Dave are headlining the remaining days of the event, which takes place August 26-28.
