Retinol Is Wonderful For The Skin - But It Doesn't Have To Be A Luxury | Sali Hugues

Retinol is unrivaled in its proven ability to reduce pore size, treat acne scars, smooth skin texture and soften fine lines. But what if you want all of that for less? Given the popularity of retinol in recent years, I was surprised at how little choice there was in the sub-£25 market, but I was nonetheless impressed with the quality.

CeraVe has finally launched a retinol serum in the UK, and it's worth the wait. It combines encapsulated retinol (better tolerated by irritable skin) with CeraVe's signature blend of three ceramides to cushion the skin barrier, and niacinamide (which everyone should incorporate into their routine now, for a myriad of good reasons , especially its calming properties). CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum (£19) is what I would – with much love and respect – call a “Fisher Price Retinol” because it makes things easier and more comfortable for beginners and retinol warys ( I know there are still a lot of you). Don't be fooled by its gentle formula, though - you should still see results within a month or two. with a lot of formula for its relatively affordable price. Here we have retinol, amino acids (to re-support the barrier), peptides (for strength), antioxidants and my favorite moisturizers, glycerin and squalane, in another simple and elegant formula which, for sound gross, looks way more expensive than it is.

These are both entry level retinol, but there's no reason why that increasing the concentration of your active ingredient (as it should, over time) also means increasing your expenses. The new SuperSolutions line from The Inkey List targets stubborn skin conditions with high-concentration formulas. The Scars, Marks & Wrinkles Solution (£22.99) is a surprisingly creamy formula that contains 1% retinol (the maximum OTC). While it works like magic on post-stain discoloration, wrinkles and scars, the squalane and apricot kernel oil in the rich yet lightweight peach cream keeps the skin barrier comfortable and moist.

< p class="dcr-18sg7f2">As with all retinoids - whether over-the-counter or prescription retinol - mild irritation (a little redness, a lot of flaking, maybe a slight, brief tingling sensation) is normal during the first week of nighttime use. This should pass as the skin acclimates. When using retinol at night, it is essential that during the day you systematically use an SPF of at least 30, whatever your skin type.
