Second bridge over the Niger ready for use by Christmas – FG

The Federal Government has declared that the second Niger Bridge will be ready for use by Christmas this year.

Acting Controller of Works at Anambra, Seyi Martins, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Monday.

Mr. Martins said the first phase of the second Niger Bridge, measuring 1.6 km, has reached 95% completion.

The Comptroller said that contrary to the news circulating that the project would be ready by 2024, the projects would be ready for use by travelers during the Christmas period.

According to him, the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to ensure that travelers enjoy a stress-free ride on the Niger River

He said motorists would not be subject to the traffic jams experienced on the existing bridge during Yuletide this year.

"The first phase of the project, which was the bridge itself, is almost complete.

"The bridge project is 95% complete and is expected to be ready by December 2022.

“The steel railings are finished, the roads are made for vehicular traffic; the toll plaza area is almost complete and all that remains is to install the toll plaza canopies,” he said.

The controller said the bridge was accessible from the Obosi interchange on the Onitsha-Owerri road and that a road was being built to connect traffic to it on the Asaba-Benin highway pending the completion of the second phase.

"The second phase of the project has not yet started, but the government has seen fit that upon completion of the first phase, it will be open to traffic.

"At the end of Onitsha, there is an interchange at Obosi along the Onitsha - Owerri highway where you can access the bridge.

“On the Asaba side, there is a link road that we are building to allow travelers to access the bridge from the Benin-Onitsha road,” he said.
