Security challenges won't stop Niger's national population census – NPC

He said: "The problem of insecurity is decreasing and we have considered all the arrangements after talking with the security agencies and the local communities, we have their cooperation. So I don't think the challenges of insecurity will prevent us from conducting the 2023 census"

The APN Commissioner explained that in the first census test conducted earlier, Niger State came first while assuring that after the main census exercise, it would again be judged the best .

"As I speak to you, my people are currently in three local government areas of Rafi, Shiroro and Mariga trying to wrap up the areas that we couldn't do when we did the trial last year" .

“We are looking at our instrument, especially the internet aspect, then recruiting for ad hoc work. We have perfected the recruitment process and we are ready as around two million Nigerians will be recruited for the job,” he revealed.

Usman also said that the Commission is ready to compile all localities demarcated during Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) based on Local Government Area showing coverage and location on interactive maps .

However, he cautioned that more localities will not necessarily translate to a higher population for any LG, hence the need for key stakeholders to provide accurate data.

The commissioner further denounced the lack of engagement of key stakeholders who should be on the front line to ensure that the state is properly remunerated.

Speaking, the former permanent secretary of the Niger State Ministry of Information and Culture, Abdullahi Paiko, called for more commitments from relevant stakeholders to ensure success of exercise in the State.

He explained that the exercise would bridge the gap between north and south, saying that "the southern part of the country is far ahead and that's not good enough for us".
