The presidency said on Monday that the security situation had improved across the country over the past seven years, justifying the removal of security barricades around the Media Trust headquarters in Abuja.

"Seven years is a long time and their new leaders may not know that in 2015 The Daily Trust needed barriers around its premises and tighter security - as many others have done sensitive institutions - to be safe from terrorists. Now they have removed everything, which is a clear indication that the threats, as they existed at the time, have lessened," the presidency said in a signed statement. by President Buhari's Spokesman, Garba Shehu.

The response came 24 hours after a scathing editorial by the media house in which it blasted Buhari's regime for last Tuesday's attack on Kuje, lamenting that "no one would be held accountable for such a massive attack to safety".

Describing the article as "misinformed", the presidency said that "the authors are right to say that Nigeria, like every other country in the world, is going through a difficult time, any and all suggestion that the Buhari administration not leaving Nigeria in a better place than where we found it - especially on the key pillars of economy, security and corruption - is pure fantasy." p>

According to Shehu, Boko Haram terrorists who in 2015 held territory the size of Belgium in Nigeria no longer hold any Nigerian territory.

“In March, our military eliminated the leader of ISWAP in an airstrike using US jets and British intelligence – a testament to the newfound confidence our allies have in our administration , which previous administrations did not enjoy.

"Furthermore, our administration is the only one in Nigeria's history to implement a solution to herder-farmer conflicts through our historic national livestock transformation plan. Already, where ranches have established under this initiative, we see a strong reduction in conflict.

“So it is wrong to say that nothing has changed, nor to speak of worsening. Even around the Daily Trust, things have improved. be that in 2015, The Daily Trust needed barriers around its premises and tight security - as many other sensitive institutions did - to be safe from terrorists.

"Now they have removed everything, which is a clear indication that the threats, as they existed at the time, have subsided," the statement read.

The Presidency also noted that the regime has done its part in the fight against corruption by putting in place mechanisms to prevent corruption from occurring.

He said "which include strengthening the office of the Auditor General, improving the capacity of anti-corruption agencies by enacting several laws and decrees; the establishment of the Treasury Single Account, a whistleblower; the implementation of public expenditure management and forensic accounting systems and several others.”

He added that the return of millions of dollars in looted funds signifies the renewed confidence of international partners in Nigeria because of the regime.

"These same partners refused to return stolen money from previous administrations for decades, knowing it would simply be stolen again," Shehu explained.

The presidency further said that credit should be given to the regime because it is struggling with problems that it did not create.

According to Shehu, "But fairness requires that we give credit where it is due. President Buhari has put in place a food policy, to grow what we eat and eat what we grow, which avoided the growing threat to food security that pushes nations into an enigma.

"In times of global hardship, we face enough challenges without inventing them where there are none. Also, pretending that achievements don't exist where they exist doesn't help anyone. Instead, let's focus on what we've accomplished so that we can continue to build on those accomplishments to meet the new challenges that continue to arise."
