Erling Haaland added two goals to his tally for Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's side comfortably beat Sevilla in their Champions League opener.

The striker continued his current excellent form to put Man City ahead before scoring his third.

Phil Foden and Ruben Dias were also on the scoresheet as the Premier League champions overtook Sevilla.

The headlines once again belonged to Haaland after a brace that took his City tally to 12 in just eight appearances and his Champions League tally to 25 in 20 outings.

Sevilla must also be tired of seeing him after he scored four goals against them in a home and away game for Borussia Dortmund in 2021.

His performance certainly put to rest any defensive concerns City might have had.

With John Stones, Kyle Walker and Aymeric Laporte all injured, manager Pep Guardiola drafted the deadline day to sign Manuel Akanji on his debut and gave Sergio Gomez a first start.

Sevilla created a chance against the run of play just before the break as Alejandro Gomez fired over a through ball from Thomas Delaney and the hosts tried to start the second half. time in a positive way.

They held City back but the visitors held on and almost snatched a second as Haaland sent De Bruyne through on goal but Bounou made a nice low save.

Haaland mistimed a volley and Rodri fired in before City doubled their lead just before the hour mark with Foden's well-run effort.

The visitors broke down down the right and Foden showed great composure inside the box to wrong-foot Nemanja Gudelj and guide a left-footed shot into the bottom corner .

Substitute Ilkay Gundogan was denied an offside effort against Foden but Haaland grabbed his second in the 68th minute when he pounced on a rebound after Bounou saved from Foden.

Suso eventually netted a shot on target for Sevilla in the 82nd minute, but Dias secured an emphatic victory for City after Julian Alvarez cleared an effort off the line in injury time.
