Sheikh Goni Aisami: Police parade 2 soldiers who allegedly killed Islamic cleric

The Yobe State Police Command said it paraded two members of the army who allegedly killed a renowned Islamic cleric, Sheikh Goni Aisami, last Friday.

DSP Dungus Abdulkarim, the Command Public Relations Officer, revealed this in a statement made available to DAILY POST in Damaturu.

It disclosed that on August 19, 2022, Detectives from Karasuwa Divisional Police Headquarters, in response to a distress call, apprehended N/A13/69/1522 Lance Corporal John Gabriel and N/A13/ 70/6552 Lance Corporal Adamu Gideon, both attached to 241 Reconnaissance Battalion, Nguru, Yobe State.

Part of the statement reads: "One of the attackers, L/CPL John Gabriel, whose intent was to steal their vehicle from unsuspecting motorists, left the barracks on said date in mufti after hiding his rifle in a cot for the military at Nguru checkpoint around 10:00 p.m.

"Meanwhile, a Sheikh Goni Aisami, a prominent Islamic scholar based in Gashu'a who was traveling alone from Kano to Gashu'a in his Honda Accord car with Reg. No KBT 31 AE arrived at the post of military control of Nguru.

"L/CPL John Gabriel asked the Islamic cleric to offer him a free ride to Jaji Maji, which he obliged. While driving and before reaching the town of Jaji-Maji, the attacker asked him to park that there was an unusual noise from the rear tire.

"When the cleric came down, while checking the tire, the suspect pulled out his gun, shot and killed him. He dragged the body and hid it in the bush.

"The suspect took possession of the vehicle with the intention of removing it but the vehicle refused to start after several attempts.

"The suspect called his accomplice L/CPL Adamu Gideon of 241 RECCE Battalion, Nguru and Jaji Maji's self-electrician to help him start the car".

DSP Abdulkarim, added that a passerby in the morning saw a corpse, a vehicle and unidentified people, then alerted Jaji-maji police personnel who quickly mobilized and rushed on the spot.

According to him, this led to the arrest of the two soldiers and the recovery of the corpse, the deceased vehicle and the rifle used in the commission of the offense as well as the recovery of a found Volkswagen Sharon bus at the scene of the crime.< /p>

“During the investigation, the culprits confessed to the crime. The investigation is still ongoing, the suspects are in custody and as soon as the investigation is completed, they will be brought to justice,” said he said.

In another development, DPS Dungus Abdulkarim, revealed that the command had paraded three suspects specializing in kidnappings and armed robberies in parts of the state.
