Skies around the world are lit up by the stunning supermoon Sturgeon in its final appearance of the year

The last supermoon of the year has risen in the sky and is lighting up the landscape of much of the UK It's the last supermoon of the year - that is when the moon appears much brighter and larger than usual Stunning photos show the moon rising over iconic landmarks including The Shard in London and Stonehenge

The Tonight's moon, known as the Sturgeon Super Moon, is expected to reach full brightness at 2.36am as it illuminates large parts of the UK.

This is because the full moon - when the whole face is illuminated - occurs when it is at its closest point to Earth on its orbit.

Photographers and sky gazers were treated to some excellent views and should enjoy them while it lasts as it is not expected may there be another supermoon until next year.

Some seized the opportunity, with stunning images of the rising moon taken in London and the south coast, while photographers from other countries also captured some spectacular images.
