Smugglers shoot customs officers, drop 81,425 liters of PMS

Federal Operations Unit, Area A of the Nigeria Customs Service says suspected smugglers fired multiple times at officers in the service in an attempt to smuggle 81,425 liters of Petroleum Motor Spirit in the Badagry region of Lagos. State in the early hours of Thursday.

A statement from the unit quotes the acting Customs Area Comptroller in charge of the unit, Deputy Comptroller Hussein Ejibunu, as saying that despite the shooting, officers were able to seize the products .

Ejibunnu said the PMS was stored in jerry cans and bags, noting that officers were attacked by the smugglers using Danish guns.

He said the seizures were the result of careful intelligence and perseverance by officers in the unit who were committed to protecting the national economy.< /p>

"When my men arrived at exactly 1.30 p.m., we were shot with Danish rifles. And you know there is a difference between Danish pistols, pump-action pistols and shotguns. assault like the AK47.

"They fired their Danish pistols several times and fled, and since it was their turf, they knew every nook and cranny to use to escape. We took possession because that I moved in with 18 Hilux vehicles loaded with officers armed to the teeth, because I was ready and I knew what could happen."

Ejibunu described the perpetrators of cross-border fuel smuggling as saboteurs who must be stopped because they do not mean well for the country.

He exposed a situation where the federal government spent huge sums of money subsidizing fuel to benefit Nigerians only for a few people to smuggle the subsidized fuel out of Nigeria to selfish ends.

"The seizure is the result of a serious tip. We have been monitoring them for the past week and I learned that some people were using bags to smuggle petroleum products out of Nigeria.

"We put a tab on them and their cup filled up. What baffled me was the way of charging, which I consider very ingenious.

"The only difference in this new one is that they used bags to conceal the product and place them near a stream, from where they will be transported."
