Downstairs in the living room, someone remembers his scales on the little piano at From outside, screams rise as the children launch themselves into the deep, dark lake lined with ducks and paddle boards.

And as you relax in the master bathroom slipper tub, beyond the open patio doors your gaze falls on a mighty oak tree, l 'one of 30,000 trees planted in this private part of the Devon countryside.

Swallows fly in and out of the bucolic sight and sound of tea that we take up from the terrace in the shade of the vine leaves. When the heat subsides, guests sip a strong gin and tonic as they scan the horizon at dusk for red deer scurrying across fields and into the woods.

These are not holiday memories of a grand country hotel with five shining stars, rather scenes of a much more bespoke, but surprisingly much less expensive place: Colleton Hall, a delicate 18th century house Grade II listed cream gabled house that stands proudly on the edge of its nearly 40 acre estate.< /p>
