Ten Hag laments 'ten really bad minutes' in Man Utd win but thanks substitutes for making an 'impact'

Erik ten Hag believes 'ten really bad minutes' made life difficult for Manchester United in their win over Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League group stage.

United suffered a potentially damaging defeat over the weekend as they were beaten 6-3 by Man City.

The Red Devils returned to action in Cyprus on Thursday night as they travel to face Omonia Nicosia.

A shock result was on the cards as the hosts led 1-0 at the break. Karim Ansarifard took advantage of a sloppy game from United to score on the counterattack.

Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were replaced and they managed to turn things around.

The Englishman netted a brace and netted Martial's goal as United fought back to lead 3-1.

United were nervous towards the end, although Nikolas Panayiotou took advantage of poor defending to make it 3-2 with five minutes left.

Undoubtedly to Ten Hag's relief, United managed to take all three points. This result keeps them second in Group E.

Ten Hag said after the match that his players were "too static" in the first half:

“We started well, then an unnecessary mistake and 10 really bad minutes. We must learn from it. You let the crowd come alive, you have to avoid that,” Ten Hag told BT Sport.

Asked what he was asking of his players at half-time, he added: "More points, we are too static, we have to move the opposition to get behind - that's why we have made two substitutions. The subs really made an impact today."

On Martial: "We already saw him in pre-season, it was really disappointing when he got injured, it had an impact on the performance of our team.

"It should only be a warm-up, on Sunday we have to react."

Rashford praised Martial after the win as the striker is a 'massive player' for United:

"Job done, but we would have liked to play better. We didn't defend badly, but we made mistakes.

"The first 35 minutes until they scored we were playing well, we just could have gotten behind them more. Then when he made the substitutes he [Erik ten Hag] wanted us to be more dynamic, taking risks and scoring goals.

On his best position: "The left side is probably more natural for me, but I like to play both [left winger and centre-forward] and help the team. If we have injuries , you never know what might happen, where you might have to play."

On Martial: "He's been a huge player for us, for a long time. When he's happy and he's there, he's an amazing player. We've both been injured, he longer than me , so it's good for him to have minutes and make an impact."
