Many killed in another attack in Kaduna's Zangon Kataf

The Kaduna state government has confirmed a new attack by gunmen in Runji village of Zangon Kataf local government area.

The government said several people were killed in Saturday's attack.

The confirmation was released Sunday morning by Samuel Aruwan, the State Commissioner, Department of Homeland Security and Home Affairs.

Mr. Aruwan said the army informed the Kaduna state government of the attack.

He said, however, that details of the exact casualties will be provided at a later briefing as security guards are still at the scene of the attack.

"The preliminary report further informed the government that the attack also injured residents and burned down an unknown number of homes in the community.

"According to the report, the troops had a fierce encounter with the attackers and are still in the general area.

“Pending a detailed report, Governor Nasir El-Rufai, who received the preliminary report in the early hours of Sunday, condemned the killings as unacceptable and unjustifiable.

"The Governor offered his condolences to the families who lost loved ones and prayed for the rest of the souls of the victims. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

“The Kaduna State Government will notify the public of the incident as soon as detailed reports are received from security agencies.

Saturday's attack was the second in a week in local government. PREMIUM TIMES reported how eight people were killed in Zangon Kataf last week.

The president of the Atyap Community Development Association, a community organization in the area, Sam Timbuwak, said the first killings took place in the community of Atak'Njei on Thursday.

He said the gunmen invaded the community from a nearby bush and began a shootout, killing eight people in the process.

Zangon Kataf in southern Kaduna is one of the areas terrorized by non-state actors.

Thousands of people have been killed or abducted in Kaduna in recent years by various armed groups. The killings continued despite the efforts of the security forces.
