Tension as shooting rocks Onitsha road

There is serious tension around the Obosi end of the Second Niger Bridge, in Onitsha, Anambra State, due to persistent gunfire along the road leading to the bridge.

The firefight that began around 9:30 a.m. Sunday pitted men in military uniform against a group of boys, suspected of being criminals.

The thugs invaded the road, connecting the second Niger bridge, which has not yet been put into operation, on two motorcycles and a tricycle, where they engaged the men in military uniform, who also came with a van Hilux, in a firefight.

The thugs ran into the surrounding bushes, from where they engaged the agents in exchange for bullets.

The situation caused panic in the area as people stayed inside.

As of this 11:40 a.m. filing, the shootings were still ongoing.

The reason the thugs invaded the area has yet to be determined, but eyewitnesses around the community said they may have come to realize an ulterior motive.

When contacted, Anambra State Police Spokesman Tochukwu Ikenga said he was in the church and would return later after completing his discoveries.
