Three Osun students hospitalized as gunmen open fire on hair salon

Three students from Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa, were shot dead by gunmen suspected of being cultists near the institution's campus.

The incident reportedly happened on Sunday at a hair salon in Amuta Junction, Ilesa, where the victims had gone to charge their cell phones.

School sources told PUNCH Metro that the victims, a student and two women, after being shot, sustained serious injuries and had to be rushed to Osun State University Hospital, Osogbo, for treatment.

A college student, who spoke on condition of anonymity, in an interview with our correspondent on Monday, said what led to the shooting could not immediately be determined.

However, he said the perpetrators were suspected of being cultists engaged in a brotherhood war with certain rival groups in the region.

"I don't know what led to the shooting, but we heard gunshots at a hair salon in Amuta where the three students had gone to charge their cell phones.

"When we arrived at the scene, the male among them was the first I observed. He was shot in the stomach. He was not dead by the time he and the other female victims were transferred to a hospital in Osogbo for treatment," the source said.

Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps Osun State Command Public Relations Officer Kehinde Adeleke, who told our correspondent the incident had been reported, said details of the perpetrators were not yet known.

Adeleke said: "On Sunday, July 23, 2023, at approximately 9 p.m., three students (one male and two female) from Osun State College of Health Technology, Ilesa were found shot and killed by unknown gunmen while charging their phones at Amuta Junction.

"The students suffered serious gunshot wounds. The victims were rushed to Uniosun University Hospital in Osogbo by the Amuta community. The students were then referred to the OAU Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife. »

Meanwhile, four suspected cultists have been arrested by members of the State Police Command's Anti-Cult Unit and members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service in Osogbo.

A resident of the Olugunna neighborhood in Osogbo, where the suspects were arrested, told our correspondent that members of rival sectarian groups were preparing to attack when a hunter passing through the neighborhood spotted them and alerted the police.

He added that during the joint raid on the suspects' hideout, a man carrying a locally made weapon was arrested.

"It was information given to the team by a cultist who was arrested earlier that led to the arrest of three others.

“The four suspects were arrested in the Olugunna neighborhood of Osogbo on Sunday. Officers from the Osun Police Command anti-cult group and members of the Nigeria Hunters and Forest Security Service carried out the raids,” he said.

When contacted, State Police Public Relations Officer Yemisi Opalola confirmed the arrest, saying members of the anti-cult squad had raided the area.
