Three police officers shot dead by unknown gunmen in Enugu

Three police officers from the Enugu State Command were shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Agbani, the headquarters of the state's Nkanu West local government.

The incident, DAILY POST learned, happened on Saturday morning at a roundabout near the Agbani divisional police station.

The police were on a stop and search mission when the attackers saw them and immediately opened fire, knocking down the three security guards.

The attack happened less than 24 hours after a former State Commissioner and Oji-River Local Government Chairman, Chief Gabriel Onuzulike and his older brother were killed in their hometown of Nkpokolo-Achi by armed men.

In the meantime, the State Police Command revealed that following a distress call about the incident, two assailants were intercepted and neutralized by a joint police/army team.

This was revealed by Daniel Ndukwe, the state police spokesman.

He said the team recovered an AK-47 rifle with two magazines loaded with ammunition, a Jeep Toyota Land Cruiser belonging to the deceased victims, a Toyota Camry car and a Jeep RAV4.

Part of his statement reads: "Pending receipt of a detailed report, please be advised that the preliminary report reveals that two (2) of the attackers, who allegedly infiltrated the Oji River from the neighboring community in Anambra State in the evening hours of 11/18/2022 who attacked and murdered a Gabriel Onuzulike (identified as former Oji-River LGA Chairman and Government Commissioner of Enugu State) and his brother at Nkpokolo-Achi in Oji-River LGA, were neutralized by a joint police and military team, who promptly responded to a distress call on the incident and intercepted the Inyi community thugs from the same LGA, as they fled to Anambra State.”

Meanwhile, the pursuit of the attackers, many of whom escaped to a nearby forest, continues, he added.
