Tim Paine: Former Australia captain set to play first top game in 18 months

Former Australian cricket captain Tim Paine

The 37 wicket keeper years old was named in the Tasmania squad to face Queensland in the Sheffield Shield.

He resigned as Australia captain last November, shortly before the Ashes.

After a leave, he resumed training in August.

Paine was due to lead Australia in last winter's series against England, but pulled out with details of text messages due out.

He messaged a colleague at Cricket Tasmania in November 2017 which led to a misconduct investigation after she made allegations against him in 2018.

Paine said he was "exonerated", with the Cricket Australia (CA) clearing him of any breaches of its code of conduct at the time and Cricket Tasmania deciding "no further action was required or appropriate".

However, after being told the texts were to be publicly revealed, Paine resigned at a tearful press conference in Hobart, saying his actions were unresponsive not to the "standard of a captain e of Australian cricket or the wider community".< /p>

Paine, whose last first-class match dates back to April 2021, makes his return for Tasmania with captain and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade unavailable due to int international commitments.

He trained as an uncontracted player with the team and made a return to low-level cricket last weekend with his club side.

"We have absolute faith and confidence in Tim and his preparation," said the coach of Tasmania Jeff Vaughan.

"Physically he's probably in the best place of his physical career, emotionally he's solid. He has Summer has trained very well with us over the past two months and we have full confidence in his wicket-keeping skills so he ticked all the boxes."
