South African television host Trevor Noah has announced his departure as host of The Daily Show, seven years after taking over the reins of the programme.

Noah made this known at the end of his show Thursday night, shocking many viewers.

Comedian Son of Patricia also thanked his crew, cast members and the public for their support, especially at the start of the show when he was even less well known.

He said: "I remember when we started, so many people didn't believe in us. It was a crazy gamble to make. I still think it was a crazy choice, this random African.

"I just find myself filled with gratitude for the trip. It was absolutely amazing. It was something I never expected.

"I realize that after seven years, my time is up, but in the most beautiful way.

"I loved hosting this show. It's been one of my biggest challenges, it's been one of my greatest joys. But after seven years, I feel like it's is the time."

Also thanking the Comedy Central network for giving him a chance, the Emmy winner added that he has other areas of his life that he wants to "continue to explore".

Trevor said, "I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and doing shows. I miss just being everywhere and doing everything.

"I'm so grateful to a network that believed in this random comedian no one on this side of the world knew about.

“I never dreamed I would be here. Felt a bit like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Came for a tour of what the previous show was, then next thing I know, it I was handed the keys. All I can say is thank you very much."
