Troops dismantle 81 illegal refineries, arrest 81 oil thieves in N/Delta – DHQ

"Operation Safe Delta" troops have destroyed 81 illegal refinery sites in the Niger Delta in the past two weeks.

They also destroyed 254 storage tanks, 173 cooking ovens, 118 dugout pits and 36 wooden boats found at the sites.

Director of Defense Media Operations, Musa Danmadami, a Major General, said this in Abuja on Thursday during the bi-weekly nationwide military operations update.

He said troops also arrested 81 suspected oil thieves at different locations during the conduct of “Operation Octopus Grip.”

The troops also recovered 1.06 liters of crude oil, 391,000 liters of diesel, 11 cars, six tank trucks, eight pumping machines and three motorcycles.

They also recovered two outboard motors, a tricycle and five AK47 rifles loaded with special 7.62mm bullets.

Mr. Danmadami said the troops also raided a suspected enclave of gunmen in Ebem community, Abi local government area in Cross River, arrested suspects and recovered weapons and ammunition.

He added that in the southeast, the army, in conjunction with other security agencies, had continued to sanitize the region in the fight against the indigenous peoples of Biafra/Eastern Security Network (IPOB/ESN ) prohibited.

In the South West, the troops of "Operation AWATSE" recovered 447 (50kg) bags of foreign rice, 125 jerrycans of 25 liters of gasoline and a vehicle.

Mr. Danmadami also told reporters that all recovered contraband items had been handed over to the Nigerian Customs Service for action.
