Troops kill bandits, apprehend 'notorious' kidnappers, thieves – DHQ

Defence Headquarters says Operation Safe Haven troops supported the offensive against criminal elements and ensured a peaceful and smooth celebration of Sallah in their area of ​​responsibility.

Director of Defense Media Operations, Bernard Onyeuko, a Major General, said so in a statement Tuesday in Abuja.

Mr. Onyeuko said troops on July 7 and 8 apprehended two notorious kidnappers - Abdulrazaq Umar and Idris Abdullahi in Heipang, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, Plateau State.

He said the operation was carried out in conjunction with the police.

He added that the suspects confessed to carrying out several kidnapping activities in Plateau and Bauchi states, including the murder of Saleh Abdulhamid (Shaba) at Ex Land Village on June 22.

Mr. Onyeuko said they also revealed that Buhari Umar was the leader of the gang.

According to him, as they headed towards the hideout of the criminals, the suspects tried to escape and were killed.

Mr. Onyeuko added that the troops on July 9 carried out a raid in Mailafia, Nisama, Dogon Filli and Gidan Waya, all in Jema'a local government area of ​​Kaduna State.

He said two armed robbers - George Yakubu, 26; and George Joseph, 25, were apprehended during the operation.

According to him, the items recovered from the suspects include three AK-47 rifles, a knife, a hoe, a cutter and a key, among others.

"In addition, on the same day, troops responded to a distress call indicating that armed men attacked a Toyota Hummer bus registered LFA 322 YR Nasarawa in the Dogon village of Filli.

"Troops mobilized to the scene and rescued nine passengers being held hostage.

"The military high command commends Operation Safe Haven troops for their efforts and encourages the general public to provide troops with credible and timely information about criminal activity," he said.
