Tuchel and Pochettino gave England a boost as FA make decision on Southgate successor

The Football Association would consider appointing a foreign manager if England manager Gareth Southgate resigns.

It will be music to the ears of Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Tuchel, both of whom are said to be keen to replace Southgate.

England withdrew from the World Cup after a heartbreaking quarter-final loss to reigning world champions France.

The Three Lions put in a solid performance against the Blues, but Harry Kane skied a late penalty in the 2-1 loss.

Following England's exit from the World Cup, there was much debate surrounding Southgate's future as manager.

He was often criticized for his management of the game, his substitutions and his overall conservative style of play.

There is no debating the work Southgate has done off the pitch, creating tremendous unity in the team.

Now might be the time to hand over the job to an elite coach, with Tuchel certainly falling into that category.

The German won the Champions League with Chelsea within six months of replacing Frank Lampard and led the Blues to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup final.

Pochettino, on the other hand, led Tottenham to the Champions League final before losing his job.

He then joined Paris Saint-Germain, where he won Ligue 1, but lost his job again after failing in Europe.

Both managers are out of work and hope to replace Southgate in the Wembley dugout, according to reports.

And according to the Telegraph, the FA will consider appointing a foreign boss if Southgate decides to stop there.

It appears the FA are hopeful Southgate will stay, although the report says the former defender is considering his future.

Some reports elsewhere have indicated there is hope for an English successor, however, this report says the FA will seek to identify a Southgate replacement 'from the widest possible pool of talent'.

The England women's team won the European Championships this summer with Dutch Sarina Wiegman at the helm.

As expected, the FA's 'preference' is said to be Southgate remaining in charge, quashing any reports that he is being sacked.

Furthermore, taking foreign coaches into account would not make Tuchel or Pochettino automatic favourites.

England's pursuit of a new boss may be hampered by the finances of a deal, with Brendan Rodgers also linked in the managerial role.

Leicester manager Rodgers earns around £2m more than Southgate a year and the FA are expected to pay the Foxes £8m in compensation.

The FA is a non-profit organization and there is a cost of living crisis in the UK, so it seems unlikely that they will destroy their salary structure or pay a huge allowance.

While there is no compensation fee if the FA seek to appoint Tuchel or Pochettino, their wage demands are likely to be gargantuan.

Pochettino was earning around £10m a year with PSG and was offered a 'similar amount' to manage Aston Villa.

This does not include its trusted staff behind the scenes. It would therefore be an expensive appointment.

Tuchel's staff would be cheaper than Pochettino's, although he probably doesn't want a salary lower than the £8m per season he earned as Chelsea head coach.

Whether England's Frank Lampard or Steven Gerrard will be considered or not remains to be seen.

In the meantime, Graham Potter and Eddie Howe could also be targeted, but are currently in charge of Chelsea and Newcastle United, respectively.

The report also indicates that Southgate assistant Steve Holland could be considered.
