Two arrested, prosecuted for possession of 468 PVC

Nigerian police have arrested two offenders in possession of 468 permanent voter cards.

This was announced in a statement signed on Sunday by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Voter Information and Education Committee, INEC, Festus Okoye.

According to the statement, the offenders, Nasiru Idris, were found with 101 PVCs in Sokoto States and another (name not mentioned) was arrested with 367 PVCs.

Okoye said their offense violated Sections 117 and 145 of the Elections Act 2022.

The statement adds that offenders are currently receiving the sentences due to them.

The statement reads: "Over the past two weeks, the Nigerian Police have arrested persons for unlawful possession of voters cards in some states of the Federation.

"In one case, the police concluded the investigation and handed over the case to the Commission, resulting in the successful prosecution of a certain Nasiru Idris in a Sokoto Magistrate's Court, which was found in possession of 101 PVCs in violation of articles 117 and 145 of the electoral law of 2022. He was sentenced to one year in prison.

"Similarly, Kano State Police arrested a man in possession of 367 PVCs. The suspect has been brought to justice and the Commission is continuing its prosecution.

"The Commission would like to reiterate that it will continue to prosecute all violators of electoral law and ensure their prompt prosecution."

To provide an update on the collection of PVCs, the Commission explained "Following the end of the legal deadline for posting the register of electors for complaints and objections, the Commission is determined to proceed with the PVC collection as transparent as possible.

“A standard operating procedure has been developed. This will be one of the issues to be discussed and finalized during a retreat held in Lagos from November 28 to December 2, 2022, involving all Resident Electoral Commissioners.

"At the end of the retreat, the Commission will publish the dates as well as the detailed procedure for the immediate collection of PVCs throughout the country.

“The Commission appreciates the patience and understanding of Nigerians, especially those who registered to vote or applied for the transfer/replacement of their cards from January to July 2022. cards available for collection, the Commission is also working to ensure that the process goes smoothly. »
