Two dead in raging California wildfire

The bodies of the deceased couple were found inside a car in the driveway of a property caught in the fire.

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jeremiah LaRue told ABC News the two appeared to be trying to escape the area.

The McKinney Fire has burned over 20,000 acres, making it the largest in California this year.

The identities of the two deceased are not being released until their families are notified.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency over the fire, which began Friday afternoon before rapidly exploding due to a dry fuel suit after a drought , high winds and lightning.

Hundreds of firefighters struggle to contain the blaze, but with little success. Sheriffs said Sunday night he was "0% content."

As a result, more than 2,000 residents of the area around Klamath National Forest are being forced to evacuate their homes. Rescue teams helped hikers who were on the national park trails.

The nearby town of Yreka - home to several thousand people - has not been evacuated and remains out of range of the fire.

Despite its large size, it's still far smaller than last year's Dixie Fire, which tore through hundreds of thousands of acres and became California's second-largest wildfire on record .

But the state experiences frequent large fires during its months-long fire season. The Oak Fire, far to the south near Yosemite National Park, is still burning after more than a week, although it has now been brought under control and is no longer growing.

Climate change increases the risk of hot, dry weather that could fuel wildfires.
