Two doctors freed by their captors in Cross River

Two doctors who were recently kidnapped in Cross River State have been released.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Cross River, Felix Archibong, confirmed the release of the doctors in a statement released in Calabar on Tuesday.

Mr. Archibong, a doctor, said the medics were released in the early hours of Tuesday, alongside two others who had been abducted with them.

He said no ransom was paid for their release.

The NMA congratulated Governor Ben Ayade of Cross River and the security agencies for the release of the two doctors.

"I can confirm that my two members have been released, they have been released with the other two abductees with them.

"I want to commend the state government and security agencies for their efforts. They have given us hope that Nigeria will be better," Archibong was quoted as saying by the news agency. of Nigeria (NAN).

The NMA chairman said he spoke with the doctors after their release, stressing that they were released safely.

Doctors were removed along the Calabar-Ikom highway on Friday. Their captors demanded a ransom of 100 million naira.

The incident prompted the NMA to begin an indefinite strike on Monday, after a 48-hour deadline for the state government to secure their freedom expired.

Cross River Police Commissioner Sule Balarabe has yet to respond to calls and text messages to him asking if a suspect has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping.
