US bans Ugandan officials after anti-LGBTQI law

The United States government announced a ban on Ugandan officials on Friday, citing human rights abuses and corruption.

The Department of State has said it is taking steps to impose visa restrictions under Section 212(a)(3)(C) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.< /p>

The Joe Biden administration noted that the U.S. government will continue to evaluate additional actions under the policy.

Those involved are accused of being responsible/accomplicating corruption, undermining the democratic process and violating human rights, including those of LGBTQI+ people.

Uganda's Anti-Homosexuality Act 2023, enacted in late May, provides for prosecution and life imprisonment or the death penalty for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex and asexual people.

The Department of State has also updated its travel advice for Americans to highlight the risk that LGBTQI+ people, or those perceived to be LGBTQI+.

The United States pledges “strong support” to Ugandans, expressing its commitment “to advancing respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in Uganda and around the world.”
