What we discussed Buhari impeachment, insecurity - Senator

Nigerian senators began Wednesday's plenary with an executive session.

Details of the closed-door meeting, which lasted over two hours, were not immediately released.

At the end of the meeting, the President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, simply said that the legislators had discussed issues affecting the functioning of the Senate in particular and the National Assembly in general.

Minority Leader Philip Aduda, however, revealed during the plenary that they discussed the state of insecurity in the country and a possible impeachment notice to President Muhammadu Buhari.

His revelation led to the drama that followed; with opposition senators walking out of the room of the Senate.

After his motion was rejected by Mr. Lawan, Mr. Aduda and other opposition MPs left the chamber in anger.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, lawmakers expressed anger that Mr. Lawan had not allowed them to discuss insecurity across the country, an issue that was debated at length behind closed doors.

>

Mr. Aduda revealed that they gave the president a six-week ultimatum or he would be "shown the way out".

We agreed behind closed doors that we should discuss the issue of insecurity in the country, but the President of the Senate frustrated our efforts to discuss it in plenary, he said.
