Why this long wait for the recognition of humanist marriages in England? | Letter
Your article on the reform of marriage regulations (Your sand in marriage: plans to relax wedding rules in England and Wales, July 19) is silent on the legal recognition of humanist ceremonies, yet The Law Commission's report only emerged as the latest in several stalling tactics by the government, starting in 2013 when parliament was about to legislate. First there was a consultation (96% favorable), then a framework report by the commission, then three years of doing nothing and another three years for this final report.
Marriage Law is in a mess and needs reform, but this gives the government even more opportunities to delay. A year is given for its response, with further consultations and possibly a complex bill before the parliamentary process, so it could be five years or more before a reform is enacted – if it ever does. est.
Scotland recognized humanistic marriages as a human right 17 years ago. It was followed by Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey. Two years ago the High Court found our current law to be discriminatory. In 2013, Parliament gave the government the power to recognize humanist marriages by simple ordinance. He should do so immediately.David PollockStoke Newington, London
