Reacting on Saturday, state police public relations officer Benjamin Hundeyin said the woman refused to come forward to positively identify her co-conspirators and testify in court.

“Investigations so far show that the woman conspired to sell her baby for 3 million naira. Because she only got 185,000 naira after handing over her baby, she contacted the press and alleged that she had stolen a baby.

“She refused all pleas to come forward to positively identify her co-conspirators and testify in court. Without her testimony and identification, nothing can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in court. there could therefore be a miscarriage of justice,” Hundeyin said, adding that the presence of the woman was paramount to the success of the investigations.

"She is an essential witness. Her presence is essential, because we do not want to get into futile lawsuits."

Recounting her ordeal to The PUNCH in early January, the woman said, “All I want is my baby; I gave birth to him around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022, and I immediately named him Joseph. I only breastfed him once because on the same day I gave birth to him, I was arrested and taken with my three children to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba, Lagos State.

"The last time I saw my newborn was at SCID, where a police officer, Samuel Ukpabio, colluded with people who claimed to be helping me and stole my baby.< /p>

"Ukpabio warned me never to return to the station; he said that if I returned, my two remaining children would also be taken."
