The Mission Doc trailer

"My friend did something stupid and brave." I really don't agree with all of this… National Geographic Documentary Films has released the first official trailer for a documentary titled The Mission, directed by talented documentary filmmakers Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss (of Boys State most recently). It will premiere at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival this weekend, hence the trailer arriving to celebrate its world premiere. 26-year-old American Christian missionary John Chau was killed by arrows while trying to make contact with an indigenous group on an island off the coast of India, one of the last remaining communities on the planet isolated. It's his story. "The Mission contains multitudes of them, thanks to the shrewd, empathetic and nuanced storytelling of Amanda and Jesse. It is a gripping murder mystery that examines the moral and ethical implications of the John Chau's story to probe deep into the complicated history of colonialism and global exploration. Although I don't like this story, it sounds like a really compelling documentary to watch.

"Looking closely at the death of John Chau, we discovered a complex and complex story, equal parts adventure and tragedy. At its core, it is an intimate drama, a emotional dialogue between father and son. But it is also raises questions for all of us about the great historical forces that have shaped our world, about the implications of faith and the legacy of what is known as the Age of Discovery. It's a story worthy of the big screen and echoes the epic tales that inspired John and ultimately doomed him. –Directors Amanda McBaine and Jesse Moss
