Striking doctors joining nurses, paramedics and paramedics on the picket line would be another blow to patients in an escalating dispute with the NHS.

Young doctors contribute much more than their training title suggests, forming a backbone in the health service.

The fact that large numbers of people consider quitting or actively seeking another job after spending years training is also a brain drain that the NHS cannot afford.

With opinion polls showing the public blaming Tory ministers for the wave of strikes in the NHS, rail industry, airports and elsewhere, opening wage negotiations rather than stubbornly refusing to talk would be politically smart and would benefit the nation.

The fact that stubborn conservatives are stubborn instead is another sign that they have gone astray and remain out of touch. Pushing young doctors to strike alongside nurses and paramedics would drive another nail in the party's coffin.
