A distraught paramedic has spoken out after watching a 'devastated' husband rush his unconscious wife to hospital after waiting hours for an ambulance to show up.

The clinician spoke about the harrowing incident to show how "completely stretched" the NHS is.

The paramedic, who works for the East Midlands Ambulance Service, says he has 'never felt worse' after being left helpless to help due to lack of resources.

They told LeicestershireLive: "All we want to do is help. The number of Category 1 calls we are hearing, as we sat waiting in hospital to hand over our patient, is awful.

"Knowing that there are virtually no resources available as we are all held up or on site with patients, when alternative pathways would have been more appropriate for them."

A heartbreaking message shared on Facebook read: "I have never felt worse than tonight. While waiting in line at the hospital with a patient, I saw a man rush into his car in the ambulance parking lot where ambulances were queuing outside A&E and I pulled up in front of my ambulance so I went to ask what was wrong."

The paramedic said members of the public should try to consider using alternative services if their condition is not life-threatening, or even refuse ambulances sent by 111 if they feel that they are able to get to the hospital on their own. The publication comes after Leicester hospitals declared a 'critical incident' yesterday due to a large influx of patients in A&E.
