Pensioners fear the government will back down on Liz Truss' promise to keep state pensions in line with soaring inflation.

Restoration of the triple lock was not included in Kwasi Kwarteng's mini-budget earlier this month, and yesterday a minister refused to commit to it in a live TV interview.< /p>

However, Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng yesterday claimed the measure - which ensures state pensions rise by 2.5%, wages and inflation tops - will not be a victim of his plans expenses.

It is feared that the economic shock waves caused by massive tax cuts and huge borrowing could lead to a new wave of austerity.

Dennis Reed, director of campaign group Silver Voices, which represents pensioners, said: 'The triple lockdown is in real jeopardy because of the Truss government's mismanagement of the economy and its tax cuts unfair and unfunded for the rich.< /p>

"Right-wing think tanks like the Taxpayers Alliance are whispering in ministers' ears that it's time to abandon the triple lockdown for good.

“We hope the government keeps its promises to the state's 12 million pensioners or the cost of living crisis for the elderly will turn into a disaster.

“If the manifesto promise to maintain the triple lock is broken again, it will be the death knell for the Tories when it comes to older voters.”
