Travel photography blog Capture the Atlas has revealed the 25 best Milky Way photos for 2024 as part of its annual Milky Way Photographer of the Year awards.

Winners are revealed each May during peak “Milky Way” season, when stars can be best captured in all their glory.

This year's list was selected from more than 5,000 submissions from 15 countries, from the United States to New Zealand, in locations including national parks, mountain lion reserves, deserts and even a castle grounds.

Capture the Atlas explained that the season of the Way The milky season extends from February to October in the northern hemisphere and from January to November in the southern hemisphere. The best time to see and photograph the Milky Way, the blog adds, is generally between May and June, with maximum hours of visibility in both hemispheres.

Capture the Atlas added: "Besides timing, the other condition for seeing the Milky Way is a dark sky, away from light pollution. The quality of the image, the story behind the shot and the overall inspiration that photography can provide are the main factors in selecting the images each year.'
