Racist attacker walks out of court as victim 'feels let down by the system'

Victim of vile racist tirade and physical assault says he feels 'abandoned' by justice system after attacker breaks out of prison.

Shabir Makim, 40, was assaulted in the street by Robert Browne, 56, who hit him repeatedly with two large umbrellas and repeatedly called him "P*ki b** **d".

Shabir, a teacher, had emerged from a Tesco Express near his home in the quiet village of Stockport, Cheadle, when he noticed Browne was involved in an 'aggressive' altercation with a homeless man .

When Shabir took out his phone to film the incident, which happened on July 25, ex-Private Browne turned on him. The ensuing racist attack - which included Browne threatening to kill Shabir - was caught on video, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Browne was given a ten week suspended prison sentence by Tameside Magistrates' Court last week (Thursday 8th December) after pleading guilty to a charge of racially motivated assault.

It's a sentence that means he won't spend any time in custody unless he does it again within the next 18 months, although the bench chairman called the attack "horrific".

For Shabir, this is not enough.

Speaking a day after the sentencing, Shabir said he felt "all over the place" and that the experience had left him angry, frustrated and feeling "depressed" about the justice system.

>

“I have so many afterthoughts,” he said. "I really feel like he got away with it. I'm heartbroken, really. There's a part of me that says whatever happens happens for the best and that I should put my trust in the Lord and all that - but then I get angry."

Shortly after the attack, Shabir shared the video on social media in an attempt to gain momentum for the conviction and raise awareness of the racist attacks.
