A man is lucky to be alive after falling backwards onto a railway track after being hit in the head and electrocuted by a live wire in India.

CCTV footage captures the disturbing moment the ticket inspector collapsed after talking to another man at Kharagpur Railway Station in West Bengal.

Sparks could also be seen flying out of his shoes as he crashed back and onto the train tracks where, thankfully, no trains were passing during last Wednesday's incident.

You could see the other man rushing back in fear.

And footage showed a pause before shocked onlookers rushed to try and help the ticket controller who was taken to hospital.

He is currently receiving treatment but is believed to be out of danger after sustaining burns.

A railway official, Ananth Rupanagudi, tweeted that the cable was shot down by a bird.

"An abnormal accident - a long piece of loose cable, caught by a bird, somehow came into contact with the OHE wire and the other end fell off and hit the head of the wire. 'a TTE (Train Ticket Examiner). He suffered burns but is out of danger and under treatment," he said.

He also said that the falling cables resulted in bird injuries.
