Rishi Sunak announces mandatory life orders for most heinous killers

Offenders who commit the most heinous murders will be sentenced to life behind bars, with no chance of release, according to new plans announced by Rishi Sunak.

The government aims to: change the law so that judges are required to impose life sentences on the most depraved killers, except in extremely limited circumstances.

Life sentences constitute the most severe punishment available in the country's criminal justice system. This comes after serial killer Lucy Letby was sentenced for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others.

The change in law will also make for the first time that this sentence to be the default sentence for all sexually motivated murders, with Downing Street saying this could have applied to the recent cases of Zara Aleena and Sabina Nessa.

Sex attacker Jordan McSweeney has been jailed at life with a minimum sentence of 38 years for the murder of a law graduate. Mrs Aleena as she walked home in east London.

Sex predator Koci Selamaj has been jailed for at least 36 years for the murder of primary school teacher Ms Nessa in the south -east London.

The Prime Minister said: 'I shared the public's horror at the cruelty of the crimes we have witnessed recently.

'The people rightly expect that, in the worst cases, there is a guarantee that life means life. They expect honesty in sentencing.

"By introducing mandatory life sentences for heinous criminals who commit the most horrific types of murder, we will ensure that they do not ever released."
