Rishi Sunak is under pressure from his own MPs to cut taxes as a sign of future problems for the prime minister.

A group of 40 Tories have written to the Chancellor outlining their plans, saying the tax burden is at its highest level since World War II and public spending is higher than in the mid-20s 1970.

Senior Tories, including former Cabinet ministers David Davis and Esther McVey, wrote the letter which said voters must be reassured that "every penny of taxpayers' money spent on their behalf pays dividends." money and is not wasted".

The right-wing group claimed £7billion was spent on 'woke' projects, such as diversity initiatives in government and independent bodies.

Their complaint underscores a wider problem for Mr. Sunak who is struggling to control his wayward backbenchers, who have already forced him into several U-turns.

Mr. Sunak has already made several major raids, with commitments on fracking, wind farms and housing targets dropped in the face of opposition from conservatives.

But he must deal with the legacy of Liz Truss's disastrous tax cut plans, which wrecked the economy but still retain support from some conservatives.

Ms Truss is said to be considering her next steps after her chaotic stint at No 10, which saw her become the shortest Prime Minister in history.

The former prime minister told friends that 'I lost a battle, I didn't lose the war', according to the Sunday Times.
