Rishi Sunak meets Volodymyr Zelensky during his first visit to Ukraine as Prime Minister

Rishi Sunak traveled to Ukraine to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky and confirm a major new air defense package for the war-torn country.

The visit is Mr Sunak's first to the region since becoming prime minister last month and follows in the footsteps of his predecessor Boris Johnson, who developed a personal friendship with his leader.

The £50million package includes 125 anti-aircraft guns and technology to counter deadly drones supplied by Iran, including dozens of radars and anti-drone electronic warfare capability, a said No. 10.

This follows more than 1,000 new anti-aircraft missiles announced by the Secretary of Defense earlier this month.

Earlier this week, Sunak used the G20 in Bali to urge other world leaders to take a tougher line against Russian aggression.

Mr. Sunak said: "Britain knows what it means to fight for freedom.

'We are with you all the way,' he told President Zelensky in a tweet .

Her promise of continued support follows in the footsteps of Mr Johnson and Liz Truss when she was in Downing Street.

A Number 10 spokesperson said: "The Prime Minister is in Ukraine today on his first visit to Kyiv to meet President Zelensky and confirm the UK's continued support."

At the end of his term, Mr Johnson said been much mocked amid claims he is using official phone calls with the Ukrainian leader to try to boost his own popularity in his country.

Earlier this week, Mr Sunak condemned Russia for having invaded Ukraine. He said the UK would continue to help the Ukrainians defend themselves against Russian action and ensure that kyiv is in po strength when they decide the time is right for peace talks.

He told reporters traveling with him in Bali that he was "telling" that Russian leader Vladimir Putin had skipped the world leaders summit.

"Russia is becoming a pariah state and it is not here to take responsibility for what it does," he said. "But I will take this opportunity to publicly record my condemnation of what they are doing."
