Survivors describe falling prey to the college "bubble" on campus, with Ray encouraging former high school outcasts to create their own communities under his watch. Ray's self-evident philosophy "Quest for Potential" became the cornerstone of a drug-induced lifestyle that Ray oversaw and benefited from financially. The trailer states that Ray was "building an army" out of the college students and making millions of dollars from the college girls working as escorts.

Director Heinzerling explained that survivor Daniel Levin approached him to make a documentary about what really happened with Ray. "He said, 'I want to do something that survivors can look at and see for themselves,'" Heinzerling said. “I went to a small liberal arts college. I had a similar group of artistic-minded friends. And so I thought, "That could be me."

Heinzerling continued, "You have a quote-unquote group of progressive-minded 'liberal' students who find themselves in an environment where they are told to hang out. And along comes this kind of heteronormative, masculine person and curator who makes very clear black and white decisions about the lives of these students and soothes all these anxieties. I think it's interesting to see this also in the context of a small liberal arts college, where you don't really associate a Trump-like personality with being attractive, yet he was attractive to these really bright young students."

Heinzerling described Ray's reign as a "psychological prison" for his targets.

"I think the goal is to understand how it happened and to empathize with the survivors and understand their story more thoroughly - and hopefully learn something about yourself and on society", he summarized. "You don't often see someone heal from that kind of abuse [onscreen]. It showed a level of strength and courage in someone to get rid of whatever shame and embarrassment they might have felt. following this and begin a healing process."

"Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence" is produced by Story Syndicate and premieres February 9 on Hulu.
