'Sausage Party' series hits Amazon with returning Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig and Michael Cera

A series based on the dark animated comedy “Sausage Party” has been ordered on Amazon Prime Video.

Titled "Sausage Party: Foodtopia," the series will feature the return of several original cast members from the 2016 adult animated film, including Seth Rogen, Kristen Wiig, Michael Cera, David Krumholtz, and Edward Norton. Will Forte, Sam Richardson, Natasha Rothwell and Yassir Lester join the cast of the series, which is currently in production for an eight-episode season and is targeting a 2024 premiere.

Released in 2016, the original film "Sausage Party" is set in a world where all food items are alive, unbeknownst to humans. Unaware of their purpose, food waits in grocery stores for human shoppers, whom they regard as gods, to purchase and take them to "the afterlife". When a sausage named Frank (Seth Rogen) discovers the truth that he is meant to be eaten, he embarks on a desperate quest with his friends to escape their fate. Plot details of "Foodtopia" are being kept under wraps, so it's unclear whether the series is a sequel to the film or a completely different story.

The original film received mixed reviews at the time, with IndieWire's chief film critic David Ehrlich writing that it's "a film whose funniest joke is that it was made in the first place". Financially, it was a box office success, grossing $141 million against a production budget of $19 million.

Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, who co-wrote the original film with Rogen and Evan Goldberg, are returning to showrun and executive produce the animated series. Conrad Vernon, who directed the Greg Tiernan feature, serves as the series' supervising director and executive producer. Rogen and Goldberg are producing for Point Gray Pictures with James Weaver and Alex McAtee. Other executive producers include Andrew Millstein, Megan Ellison, and Patrick Chu. The original film was a Columbia Pictures and Great Beyond co-production, while "Foodtopia" is co-produced by Annapurna Television, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon Studios.

"Film was once the superior art form to television, and we have humbly reached the pinnacle of what can be achieved with film in our remarkable opus, 'Sausage Party,'" said Rogen and Goldberg in a joint statement. "But now that cinema is completely dead and TV is king of entertainment forever, we've decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary team in the soon-to-be-legendary TV masterpiece 'Sausage Party: Foodtopia'. has all the heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food sex. In other words, it's just what the world needs right now."
